Welcome to the Centre for Indigenous Student Services (CISS)! CISS is a shared space for students; staff and faculty to come together as one community. We ask that you respect each other’s differences, and recognize/ accept diverse experiences, ideals, perspectives and values. We ask that you are open and accepting of all people and treat others nicely and with compassion. It is your responsibility to take ownership for your educational journey and we look forward to supporting you. At CISS, we believe this is a safe space for all Indigenous people on campus. Guests and Allies are expected to respect Indigenous culture and community. Every person who uses CISS space(s) is expected to follow the Housekeeping rules set out below. HOUSEKEEPING: 1. Please sign in, when you come into the space. 2. If CISS members bring a guest into the space, they also must sign in. Members are responsible for their guest(s) and must tidy up after their guest(s). 3. Guests who attend CISS on a regular basis will (be asked) to fill out a “guest membership form” . This form will be given to you by the receptionist. Ensure you wash ALL DISHES that you use. If the drying rack is full please put dishes away in the cupboards. 4. (Use of items in cupboards are not permitted at this time, dishes, cups, utensils) Kitchenette guidelines are posted in the kitchen on the fridge and cork board, please read and help to keep our kitchen clean. 5. Please keep your work area/ resources room/programs room clean and tidy. We ask that you clean all spills, take any personal belongings with you when you leave. 6. Log off after using computers. If you are logged in to any personal social media/email accounts on a computer ensure that you log off these accounts when you are done. If you see that someone has forgotten to log off one of their accounts, please respect their privacy and log off for them right away before using the computer. 7. We ask that you do not save personal documents/items on computers. Any files left on the computers will be deleted at the end of term in December and April. 8. No smoking, alcohol or drugs are permitted in CISS (including Skennen’ko:wa Gamig). You may NOT be in these spaces if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. 9. Please sign out books with reception. 10. Smudging is welcomed and encouraged at CISS. We ask that you turn on the vents while you smudge. There is a button located in the resource room and the programs room. Please ask a staff member should you require assistance. Please note: The information you provide will be used for CISS and York administration purposes to provide exceptional, culturally-grounded programs and support services to Aboriginal students attending York. It will also allow you to use the Centre's resources and receive information on our list serve.
